⚠️ AF = Air Flow Error
Whirlpool Dryer AF Error - Complete Fix Guide
Your Whirlpool dryer showing AF? This is the complete guide to fix the airflow problem and get your dryer working again.
⚠️ What AF Means
AF stands for Air Flow - your dryer is not able to exhaust air properly. The dryer is taking too long because airflow is restricted. This is a fire hazard!
🔥 Lint buildup in dryers causes over 15,000 house fires per year in the US alone. Fix AF immediately to prevent fire risk.
🔧 Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1: Clean the Lint Filter (Every Time!)
This is the #1 cause of AF errors. Clean before AND after every load.
- Open the dryer door
- Pull out the lint filter (top of door opening)
- Peel off lint build-up from the screen
- Wash with warm water and scrub gently
- Dry completely before reinstalling
✅ Do this EVERY load - takes 30 seconds.
Step 2: Clean Behind the Lint Filter
Lint accumulates in the filter slot too.
- Vacuum the lint filter slot thoroughly
- Use a crevice tool to reach deep
- Remove any built-up lint or debris
- Check the blower wheel area too
Step 3: Inspect the Dryer Vent Hose
The flexible hose behind the dryer collects lint.
- Carefully pull dryer away from wall
- Disconnect the vent hose (both ends)
- Check for kinks, crushes, or damage
- Clean inside the hose with your hand or brush
- Replace if damaged - use rigid metal pipe if possible
Step 4: Clean the Exterior Vent
The outside vent opening can get clogged.
- Go outside where the dryer vents
- Open the exterior vent cover
- Remove any lint, leaves, snow, or debris
- Make sure the flapper opens freely
- If you have a leaf problem, install a vent hood
Step 5: Check Vent Length
Long vents restrict airflow significantly.
- Maximum recommended length: 25 feet
- Each 90° elbow = subtract 5 feet
- Each 45° elbow = subtract 2.5 feet
- If over 25 feet, consider shortenting or upgrading
- Use 4" diameter duct (not flexible vinyl)
Step 6: Check the Blower Wheel
If everything is clean and still AF, check the blower.
- Unplug dryer and remove back panel
- Locate the blower wheel
- Check for lint buildup on the blades
- Clean any debris
- Ensure wheel spins freely
- If broken or worn, replace ($40-80)
