AF stands for Air Flow - your dryer is not able to exhaust air properly. The dryer is taking too long because airflow is restricted. This is a fire hazard!

🔧 Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1: Clean the Lint Filter (Every Time!)

This is the #1 cause of AF errors. Clean before AND after every load.

  1. Open the dryer door
  2. Pull out the lint filter (top of door opening)
  3. Peel off lint build-up from the screen
  4. Wash with warm water and scrub gently
  5. Dry completely before reinstalling

Step 2: Clean Behind the Lint Filter

Lint accumulates in the filter slot too.

  1. Vacuum the lint filter slot thoroughly
  2. Use a crevice tool to reach deep
  3. Remove any built-up lint or debris
  4. Check the blower wheel area too

Step 3: Inspect the Dryer Vent Hose

The flexible hose behind the dryer collects lint.

  1. Carefully pull dryer away from wall
  2. Disconnect the vent hose (both ends)
  3. Check for kinks, crushes, or damage
  4. Clean inside the hose with your hand or brush
  5. Replace if damaged - use rigid metal pipe if possible

Step 4: Clean the Exterior Vent

The outside vent opening can get clogged.

  1. Go outside where the dryer vents
  2. Open the exterior vent cover
  3. Remove any lint, leaves, snow, or debris
  4. Make sure the flapper opens freely
  5. If you have a leaf problem, install a vent hood

Step 5: Check Vent Length

Long vents restrict airflow significantly.

  1. Maximum recommended length: 25 feet
  2. Each 90° elbow = subtract 5 feet
  3. Each 45° elbow = subtract 2.5 feet
  4. If over 25 feet, consider shortenting or upgrading
  5. Use 4" diameter duct (not flexible vinyl)

Step 6: Check the Blower Wheel

If everything is clean and still AF, check the blower.

  1. Unplug dryer and remove back panel
  2. Locate the blower wheel
  3. Check for lint buildup on the blades
  4. Clean any debris
  5. Ensure wheel spins freely
